Switzerland is home to more than 1,100 different types of moss? The climate in Switzerland is very suitable for moss. Moss ball bonsais are typically kept outside so that the moss may thrive.
The plants for this DIY kit are not hardy, so you will have to overwinter your Kokedama indoors.
While caring for your Kokedama indoors, your moss may start to turn brown due to lack of fresh air. However, even if the moss turns completely brown, you can still revive it by returning it to an outdoor environment in the spring or fall and giving it sufficient water and a bit of sunlight everyday. Within 3-4 weeks you will see little green spots starting to appear. Within 5-6 weeks, your Kokedama will be green again. It‘s like magic!
Kokedama translates to ‚Koke‘ moss and ‚dama‘ ball (jap. 苔玉). A bonsai technique, which was developed in Japan over 500 years ago. Not only do they look elegant, they are really fun to create.
